Monastic works & paramentics

From the gold cap to the cingulum cord

Since the 15th century, monastic work, which is skilfully and painstakingly handcrafted from a variety of materials in monasteries, has been an integral part of religious customs in Austria.

The The science of paramentics is dedicated to the design of liturgical vestments and worship textiles. Clergymen such as the Pope, cardinals, bishops and members of religious orders wear a pectoral cross (pectoral cross) on cords, which are often interwoven with gold thread. The colours of these pectoral cords indicate rank, position and affiliation.

In many parishes, altar servers also wear a medallion with the patron saint, the Virgin Mary, or a small cross on monochrome pectoral cords, which are designed to match the colour of the gown. These cords also fall under the generic term Trimmings.

Practical paramentics also specialises in the decoration of churches, in particular elements such as altar ceilings (e.g. antependia) and pulpit hangings. Our workshop specialises in the design and manufacture of such paraments.

However, it is not only clergymen who use these artistic works - traditional monastic works also merge with modern design techniques in traditional costumes.

Reference

Gold embroidery is a rare craft that is used in elaborate techniques to decorate garments - today especially in traditional costume fashion. Many impressive examples of this craft can be found both in old traditional costumes passed down through generations and in new, contemporary creations.

Claudia's gold embroidery & traditional costume embroidery produces jewellery exclusively by hand using genuine gold and silver threads made from M. Maurer's high-quality materials. The elaborately crafted Kasettl scarves are particularly noteworthy: they are made of fine half-silk and are skilfully embroidered with gold-plated bouillon.
